Captain Alan Reid - Managing Director

Master Mariner, Dip. Maritime Law (Natal). Worldwide maritime trading experience in a variety of vessel types up to the rank of master. Joined P&I Associates in 1986 and appointed Managing Director in 1994. Alan has an enormous wealth of experience having handled several high profile major maritime casualties in our region, as a result, he is often asked to address the leaders in the industry and to share his knowledge and expertise on a wide range of topics.

Michael Heads - Director, Legal and Claims (Durban)

Michael joined the company in 1997 and is an admitted English solicitor and he is also an admitted South African attorney. He managers the Operations and Claims teams and provides advice and assistance on all aspects of P&I insurance. He is frequently asked to provide advice with regard to the arrest of ships and associated ships in South Africa. Michael has written numerous articles which have been published both locally and abroad on loss prevention issues. He is dedicated to the P&I industry and also lectures and teaches Marine Law and Marine Insurance at a local maritime school.

Anne-Marie Bonnin - Director, Legal and Claims (Durban)

Anne-Marie is an admitted English solicitor and she joined the company in 1993. She is an essential member of the company’s emergency response team and plan. The company is the proud network partner for the TT Club in Southern Africa and Anne-Marie handles its large and varied portfolio in the region. She is very well liked and respected by all who know her and she is regarded as the region’s foremost authority on through transport insurance issues.

Ronald Evans - Stowaways and Crew Matters (Durban)

A sound knowledge of the African Continent and has extensive contacts in Governmental and Diplomatic circles both in and outside of South Africa to enable the successful handling of stowaway cases. Joined P&I Associates in 1997.

Jason Hossack - Surveys (Durban) 

Joined P&I Associates in June 2005 and previously had 2 years experience with liquid cargo surveys. Responsible for survey coordination at Durban.

Byron Elkington - Surveys (Durban) 

Joined P&I Associates in October 2008 and has 9 years experience in the petrochemical and bulk liquids industry as a marine surveyor.

David MacDonald - Stowaways/ Crew Matters (Durban)

Joined P&I Associates in January 2009. Before joining P&I Associates David gained 13 valuable years in ship operations with a leading ships agency in Durban.

Thami Mhlongo - Assistant (Durban)

Having completed Shipping Practise at the country’s oldest maritime college, Thami spent a year at a leading shipping company before he joined P&I Associates in February 2010 as a Trainee.

Garth Hansen - Surveys and Claims (Cape Town)

Chief Officers certificate – Was based in Saldanha Bay since 2002, however in April 2009 assumed responsibility for both Cape Town and Saldanha Bay and is based in Cape Town. Transferred to P&I Associates in September 2008 however has worked previously as a marine surveyor for an associate company since 1994.

Neil Chetty – Stowaways/ Crew matters (Cape Town)

Joined P and I Associates in October 2010 .  Prior to joining P and I Associates Neil gained 14 years experience in ships operations with a leading ships agent in Durban and Cape Town.

Derek Wood – Surveys / Stowaways/ Crew matters (Richards Bay)

Derek is a Master Mariner and has been involved in surveying for the past 31 years. Derek is based in Richards Bay and is responsible for handling all aspects of shipping including stowaway and crew matters.

Captn. M.M. Ittiso – Surveys/ Stowaways/ Crew matter (Kenya)

Captain Ittiso has spent over 30 years in the shipping industry serving as Chief Officer and Master of various bulk carriers sailing the Persian Gulf and East Asian trade routes. Captain Ittiso joined Protecting and Indemnity Kenya Ltd in 1994 and now serves as Managing Director. With so many years experience in the industry Captain Ittiso is able to provide assistance with claims, surveying, crew matters and stowaways.
