Anne-Marie Bonnin

Anne-Marie is an admitted English solicitor and she joined the company in 1994. She is an essential member of the company’s emergency response team and plan. The company is the proud network partner for the TT Club in Southern Africa and Anne-Marie handles its large and varied portfolio in the region. She is very well liked and respected by all who know her and she is regarded as the region’s foremost authority on through transport insurance issues.

Joined P&I Associates in October 2010. Prior to joining P&I Associates Neil gained 14 years experience in ships operations with a leading ships agent in Durban and Cape Town.

Joined P&I Associates in October 2008 and has 9 years experience in the petrochemical and bulk liquids industry as a marine surveyor.

Garth Hansen

Garth has a Chief Officers certificate and previously worked as a marine surveyor for an associate company since 1994. Garth has been based in Saldanha Bay since 2002. In April 2009 Garth assumed responsibility for both Cape Town and Saldanha Bay branches.

Captain Ittiso has spent over 30 years in the shipping industry serving as Chief Officer and Master of various bulk carriers sailing the Persian Gulf and East Asian trade routes. Captain Ittiso joined Protecting and Indemnity Kenya Ltd in 1994 and now serves as Managing Director. With so many years experience in the industry Captain Ittiso is able to provide assistance with claims, surveying, crew matters and stowaways.

Joined P&I Associates in January 2009. Before joining P&I Associates David gained 13 valuable years in ship operations with a leading ships agency in Durban.

Thami Mhlongo

Surveys / Claims (Durban)


Having completed a Shipping Practice course comprising of Maritime Law and Marine Insurance at the country’s oldest Maritime college and he now manages and coordinates the Durban office. Thami went on to spend a year at a leading shipping company gaining work experience before he joined P&I Associates in February 2010 as a Trainee.

Under the mentorship of Captain Alan Reid and Michael Heads, Thami obtained valuable hands on experience in handling marine claims. In order to widen his knowledge and experience of P&I claims, Thami began working in the survey department to enable him to understand the nature of the business and the collection of evidence in order to apply this during the handling of claims.

Thami has since gained valuable experience in handling surveys and claims and he now manages the claims department.

Michael Heads

Managing Director (Durban)


Michael joined the company in 1997 and is an admitted English solicitor and he is also an admitted South African attorney. In May 2014 Michael was appointed as Managing Director due to the retirement of Captain Alan Reid. Michael manages the Operations and Claims teams and provides advice and assistance on all aspects of P&I insurance. He is frequently asked to provide advice with regards to the arrest of ships and associated ships in South Africa. Michael has written numerous articles which have been published both locally and abroad on loss prevention issues. He is dedicated to the P&I industry and also lectures and teaches Marine Law and Marine Insurance at a local maritime school.

Nkulu Mngadi

Nkulu Graduated at S.A Maritime School and Transport College with a NQF level 3 certificate in Transport In 2008 he Graduated at S.A Maritime School with honours in NQF level 4 Shipping Practice and Customs Clearing and Forwarding. Nkulu then went on to work for a Clearing and Forwarding agency as an intern from 2009 to 2010. In 2011 Nkulu joined P&I Associates (Pty) Ltd as a trainee claims handler and till date is our Junior Marine surveyor.

Vishal Pragraj

Vishal has been with the company for 14 years working in the Accounts Division. In January 2014 Vishal was promoted to join our Operations Department to assist in stowaway and personal injury cases.

Roy Carby-Thompson

Roy is based in our Richards Bay office and has been with P&I Associates for 28 years. Roy has a broad knowledge of the P&I Industry and is responsible for handling all General Surveys to Crew & Stowaway matters. Roy manages the Richards Bay office

Innocent Manengele

Stowaways / Crew Matters (Cape Town)


Innocent started her shipping career in helicopter ship services in Cape Town dealing with crew changes and medivacs. Later she was employed for 4 years by Rennies Shipping Agency and dealt with bunker calls, repairs and container loading plans. In October 2014 Innocent joined P and I Associates in Cape Town to assist with crew matters and stowaways. She now manages the Cape Town office
